Design considerations included maximizing daylighting and connecting interior and exterior spaces. An open floor plan with casual living, cooking and eating areas offer a spacious feeling in a relatively small footprint. Ample storage is incorporated into the layout, as well as a thoughtful approach to public and private spaces. The program called for three bedrooms and two and a half bathrooms. The concept for the design is reminiscent of tradition courtyard style architecture in that the home is oriented around a private courtyard that is contained by three sides of the structure. On one side, the living spaces open right onto the patio. The hallway leading to the bedrooms opens onto the central space with sliding glass doors and generous windows above a built-in daybed. Storage is maximized along the hallway with built-in bookcases. The connection to the courtyard is reinforced in the guest rooms by incorporating large sliding barn doors that align with the sliders to the outdoor space. The master bedroom also opens onto the courtyard from the third side.
