Yachats Youth and Family Activities Program Center
Location: Yachats, OR | Completion Date: In Progress
The Yachats Youth and Family Activities Program (YYFAP) is currently housed in an old elementary school on Highway 101 in the heart of Yachats. The building, known as The Commons, also contains City Hall and is the location for many community events throughout the year. The youth program has outgrown the space allocated for them in the existing building.
The YYFAP board, members of City Council, and the Friends of The Commons have come together to envision an expanded facility that will better serve the needs of the local community. These needs include additional space for the after-school care of school-age children and doubling the space currently provided for summer programming. In addition, a more private, yet not isolated, space is needed for teen-specific activities. The cooperative preschool on-site desires to expand and, hoping to soon be a State-licensed daycare, needs an upgraded facility to comply with the State’s standards for licensed daycare facilities.
By carefully positioning the addition for the YYFAP between the existing building and the covered picnic pavilion, we created a courtyard that is sheltered from the wind. Large windows that draw their inspiration from the original windows in The Commons building let lots of natural light into the spaces and allow for natural ventilation and passive cooling of the addition.
The clients are currently seeking funding from the Community Development Block Grant program and the USDA Rural Development Agency.
