New Winds Affordable Housing

Location: Florence, OR | Completion Date: 2007

The New Winds Apartments in Florence is an apartment building for low-income residents with severe persistent mental disabilities. It contains seventeen one-bedroom apartments and a two-bedroom manager’s unit situated around three interior courtyards. The building also contains an administrative office and shared community spaces such as several living/sitting rooms, a computer room and an exterior deck. The common spaces encourage interaction and camaraderie among the residents in a safe and controlled environment.

Located near the main entry, the manager’s apartment and office allow the building manager to inconspicuously supervise the safety of the residents while respecting their privacy.

This project was part of a State of Oregon RFP, which the Housing Authority and Community Services Agency of Lane County (HACSA) was awarded, and came to us with the schematic design of the building already completed. Our role was to complete the drawings, from design development through construction documents, without substantially changing the original design. We collaborated with DLA Landscape Architecture on this project and worked with HACSA through the construction administration phase.
