Fairmount Square Rowhouses

Location: Eugene, OR | Completion Date: 2006

The Fairmount Square Rowhouses are designed to respect the character and scale of Eugene’s historic Fairmount neighborhood. To maximize space on the small parcels, access to the garages is from an alleyway, thus allowing the central outdoor space, flanked by the house and the garage, to be even more generous. Above each garage is a small studio with its own kitchenette and bathroom.

Sustainability was the central theme for the Fairmount Square Rowhouses. The first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified homes in Eugene, the rowhouses were awarded the LEED for Homes Silver certification.

The project incorporates sustainable and recycled/recyclable materials, including bamboo and Marmoleum flooring and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified cabinetry. High efficiency windows, a high efficiency furnace and more insulation than is required by code all contribute to the energy efficiency and thermal comfort of the building.

The rowhouses were designed to be the first phase of a larger, medium-density residential development. Other sustainable features include natural daylighting and natural ventilation strategies, programmable thermostats, solar hot water heaters, and drain water heat recovery systems in the showers. Native vegetation used in the landscaping and an irrigation system with rain sensors significantly reduce the water needed for irrigation.

This project was certified with a LEED™ Silver Rating from the U.S. Green Building Council in 2006.

Awarded First Place for Residential Architecture in the A.I.A. People’s Choice Awards in 2006.
